about

This is a special piano and vocal version of the track that appears on the album, The Dust Sings.

I wanted to share a version of the song that highlights the exquisite piano playing and arranging of Paul Gioia. Paul, who was remarkable muso and human being from Western Australia, recently passed away, and this track is stared in his memory.

I met Paul through TEAR Australia, a great humanitarian agency, and we joyfully shared together in song with TEAR's supporters. Years later Paul was kind enough to offer his beautiful playing for some of the tracks on my recent album.

The song is inspired by Tim Winton's stage play, 'Signs of Life.'

All proceeds from the sale of this track will go to TEAR Australia to support their work in some of the hardest places on our planet.

Thank you for your support.

Paul, you were a gift. I stand with your family and friends in honouring your life.

lyrics

Signs of Life

Get yourself out of bed
The time has come, the day is started
We're going down to the river bed
To see what rises, we've been too long parted

There's been no rain for awhile round here
But the spirits strong, you've got nothin to fear
You take the steps and I'll walk with you
These old valleys will become new

We're all looking for something
real in your face
We’re all looking for signs of life
Who will stand in the line
and take your place?
We're all looking for signs of life

I know you've been drinking too much
To drown the pain, to stop the rush
But the pain won't sink and the time it comes round
And it washes you out 'til it's you who drowns

So let's go to the waters and drink
Even if only from a tiny soak
Let's walk and talk and think
You can even tell that rotten joke

We're all looking for something
real in your face

The weathers changed there's no doubt
But in a person's heart falls the deepest drought
I know you burnt what was closest to you
I know you live with the scars you choose
Yet another way is always there
You can feel it in your chest if you choose to care
