about
A tune I wrote for Common Grace for Advent 2023. This is an outlaw country inspired rumination on how the love of family, friends and the land itself might have grown up a young fella from Nazareth; a young soul who went onto become a prophet of peace and justice, and who many felt that they heard the voice of love itself.
lyrics
Nazareth
Words and Music by Steve Bevis
O Little Town of Nazareth, the home of God
It took your village to raise a child this good and wonderful
Counsellor unto the human heart, body, mind and soul
Nazareth, through your backstreets, the living God did stroll
From Nazareth we all are blessed
There’s no need for any heart to now feel so stressed
From Nazareth the poor are blessed
The Prince of Peace he walked your paths
And as poor man he was dressed
The King of Kings had come, but you’d have never guessed
Your cousins they shaped you when on the hills you all ran free
Uncles and Aunties showed you love and how to simply be
Feasting when the harvest came
Together you would dance
A whole mob of family shaped your faith more than circumstance
From Nazareth a prophet rose
A living wage upon your lips, justice is what you chose
From Nazareth life was loved
Life was held with tenderness, no need for a glove
Heaven came down made home with us…
Far from the temple’s power your perfect wisdom grew
Children always wonder aloud
when something new comes into view
You saw through eyes of wonder, and never closed your eyes
To the beauty of the faith of others, and the glory of the wild
In Nazareth life overcame death
Every soul can feel at home and simply draw breath
Feel at home, your precious soul can rest and draw breath
From you all wisdom comes, a home grown love
Grown up from conversation and the wings of a holy dove
Spoken in dusty streets ’n’ along those mountain paths
Hearing heaven within your words, pure faith in a child’s laugh
You had the gift to bind together all who fell apart
To put in words the hopes of all and the longing of our hearts
Yes, you made us all at home when you forgave us our false starts
Heaven came down made home with us
It took a village to raise this child,
The mountains and the woods,
The lilies of the fields and the shores on which you stood
You came down from Galilee
From the land as a child you’d roamed
You showed all the people you’d meet
This world is God’s true home
Heaven came down made home with us
O heaven came down to earth in your humble birth
Every heart and home reminded of it’s true worth
In Nazareth you learnt what’s best
To work beside the poor, sharing faith in the simpleness
In Nazareth through love alone
The joy of life together is the seed that you’ve sown
Heaven came down made home with us
You took your tools and built a world, a world that is truly home
Your heart the door, your word the key
Your love our common home
Your heart the door, your word the key
Your love our common home
I step outside into your love and I always am at home
I step outside into your love, I always am at home
